Images Best Practices
WEB IMAGES BEST PRACTICE GUIDELINES
These are a few best practice guidelines for working with images on a website.
FOLDER STRUCTURES
There is a structure in place to keep all images grouped together for future editing and to make it easy to locate.
File Structure for Newsletter/Blog images:

The best practice is to create a folder structure is created as follows:
main-folder-name
- YYYY (Example: 2014)
-- YYYY-MM (Example: 2014-09)
---- filename1.jpg
---- filename2.jpg
Note: there are some option on the right bar for each picture or folder you have selected.
CREATING NEW FOLDERS
If you would like to create a new folder just make sure you selected the correct place to create the folder and use the New Folder option just as you would do it on the local computer. Use hyphens or underscores for spaces (Example: 2014-09).

UPLOADING AN IMAGE
Important Note: Please ensure that you have already resized your image to be no more than 800px wide BEFORE you upload.
Large images take up unnecessary disc space and can slow down your website.
Images must be in RGB format. Please see further down for more information.
When adding new images for your newsletters/blog, navigate to the correct month in the file structure and add use the Upload button to upload your images. Use hyphens or underscores for spaces (Example: image-pants-01.jpg).

The naming of images should not have spaces in them. You can use the underscore or hyphens in place of spaces.
USING OF IMAGE WITHIN AN ARTICLE
You can use the Image Manager to change the width or height proportionately. There are other options you can set. You can see a preview on the right before you apply your image.

WHEN TO USE JPG OR PNG
By default images being used should be in the jpg format as they use the least amount of space (however, this can sometimes change).
The reason you use the png format is when you want the image to have a clear background.

USE WINDOWS PAINT TO RESIZE AN IMAGE
You can use the windows program Paint to resize an image. Open Paint and open the image you wish to resize.

Click on the Resize option and a new window will pop up.

You can now resize your maximum size before uploading. Change the Horizontal total to 800px.

*Note: Make sure the Maintain aspect ratio is ticked.
Click the OK button and use the “File Save As” option so not to overwrite the original file.
